Looking at the historical development towards Industry 4.0, it appears that during the first three stages of the industrial revolution, the focus was on mechanization, mass production and automation. Today, it is more about the production of cost-effective, individual unique items through flexible, self-organized production. In addition, new business models are enabling the move from product provider to service provider. And all of this is possible with the right technology.
The 'Basissystem Industrie 4.0' project was launched in 2016. The aim was to develop middleware that provides the services required for Industry 4.0.
