Climathon in Mannheim - coding against climate change

Climate change affects us all!
But only together can we make a difference.

We are using up our resources, dumping waste into our oceans, polluting our air and destroying our own ecosystem. The consequences: famines, heatwaves, species extinction, disappearing habitats, drought, the spread of disease... The consequences of climate change for our planet are devastating. We all bear responsibility for this! The Climathon takes on this responsibility and offers participants a platform to make a difference together.

But how can we achieve a turnaround? Ultimately, each individual must take action, but only together can we achieve real change. At objective partner, we are convinced that the IT sector must also play its part. Because with innovation, speed and creativity, modern technologies in particular can make the difference for our ecosystem.

Together with you, we want to develop, drive forward and actively combat climate change. Whether you are a developer, engineer, data scientist, maker, idea generator or designer: Here you have the chance to create sustainable ideas, software and prototypes, which in the best case will later be further developed and make a contribution to protecting our planet.

We are therefore pleased to invite you to Mannheim from October 25 to 27 - everyone is welcome! But first of all, here is some more information for you:

What happens at the Climathon?

In the Climathon, you have 40 hours to develop a prototype for a digital solution. You can choose a challenge from various categories, such as Food, Water Management, Human Behavior or Energy. Of course, you don't have to find this solution alone, but work in teams of three to seven people! After all, saving the world is much more fun in a group than alone!

You can register as a group or on your own. You are sure to find the right team for you on site or in advance in the Climathon Slack community.

How does the Climathon work?

The Climathon is not just about hacking and programming. Hackerstolz and the city of Mannheim have prepared a varied program for you - key notes and talks with interesting speakers, yoga workouts and, of course, good food. After the key notes, it's time to choose a challenge as a team and come up with a project. Then it really gets going: it's time to start coding!

After dinner, the night-coding begins - whether with or without Nap in the chill-out areas is entirely up to you.

Saturday starts with a hearty breakfast and lots of coffee! Then the cycle begins: Eat, Sleep, Code, Repeat. Until it's Sunday. Then it gets serious: 9 o'clock is the deadline! Your project should be ready. At 10 a.m. you will pitch it in front of the others. A short time later, the jury will honor the winners. The three best projects can each win €2,000 seed capital to drive their project forward! Be part of it and register now.

Who is the Climathon aimed at?

The most important prerequisite you need to take part in the Climathon is a love for our planet. We are looking for people who are committed to fighting climate change and want to make a difference. This includes programmers and developers, technicians with a scientific background, data experts, makers who enjoy working with IoT and hardware, the brains behind the ideas and designers.

Can't find yourself in one of the above descriptions, but would like to take part? Let your superpower take part in the event! We look forward to seeing you!

Why a Climathon?

Are you wondering why the question of "why" even needs to be asked? Surely everyone should be aware of this by now? But many people lack insight into how much this development affects us. The official Climathon website therefore features a simple visualization: a clock! You can watch the seconds, minutes, hours and years tick by until the available volume of CO2 collapses. And this development will not stop on its own. We have to do something about it - for our planet's time!

For this reason, Hackerstolz and the city of Mannheim are organizing the Climathon. This is not just about sustainability, but about innovative ideas that can combat climate change. The Climathon is a supra-regional initiative of the Climate-KIC, an EU institution.

What does objective partner have to do with the Climathon?

objective partner is one of the main sponsors of the Climathon. We understand our responsibility towards future generations and our planet. At the same time, we are pleased to give young developers an opportunity to showcase their talents. For this reason, we have decided to support the Climathon in the immediate vicinity of our headquarters in Weinheim. To become a sponsor of the event, we had to meet a few criteria. Hackathon e.V. put us through our paces in terms of sustainability, e.g. ISO 50001 certification, X-Grad compatibility, our CDP ClimateScoring rating and our latest sustainability report.

We have also created one of the challenges that you can take on together with your team at the Hackathon!

Challenge: Water Management

Sustainable water management for African agriculture

Water is a valuable commodity in third world countries such as Africa. Too much is used in agriculture, although it is also needed as drinking water. With your help, we want to reduce the waste of water. Our vision is to help people, supported by technology and your creativity.

We make this available to you:

To reduce the waste of water, we want to develop a smart system that irrigates plants of all kinds. It consists of a small IoT device that monitors the plants' environment and soil to control irrigation.

You need to keep these things in mind:

  • The system must be affordable for everyone and the benefits should be profitable in the shortest possible time.
  • The components should be easily available in large quantities.
  • Your task is to create the prototype and the appropriate algorithm.
  • This should determine the amount of water for irrigation based on the soil environment, the intensity of the sun and the type of plant.
  • We will provide you with microcontrollers, cables and sensors to build your first prototype.
