Frequently asked questions

The digital product passport is a data set that contains comprehensive information about a product from production to sale and beyond. It promotes transparency and traceability in the supply chain and supports the sustainable circular economy. Information such as origin, materials, reparability and recyclability are included in the digital product passport.

The digital product passport is being introduced to increase the transparency and traceability of products, promote the circular economy and achieve sustainability goals. It is intended to reduce environmental impact, improve energy efficiency and ensure compliance with regulations.

The digital product passport offers numerous advantages:

  • For consumers: transparency, trust, product safety, protection against counterfeiting, environmental awareness and an improved customer experience.
  • For producers: protection of product integrity, traceability, quality control, optimization of the supply chain, customer loyalty and promotion of the circular economy.
  • For the ecosystem: fast problem solving, better customer understanding, proactive communication, collaboration and efficient knowledge management.

The European Commission has decided to make the digital product passport mandatory for all product groups by 2030 at the latest. Some sectors, such as the textile industry, the construction industry, the automotive industry and consumer electronics, must already meet the requirements by 2027.

The digital product passport will be mandatory for all product groups. Particularly resource and energy-intensive products such as computers, communication and electrical appliances will be included at an early stage.

First of all, according to the EU Battery Regulation, this affects all products containing batteries. The following types of batteries are affected:

  • Portable batteries: Batteries used in mobile devices such as smartphones, laptops and tools.
  • Automotive batteries: Batteries that are used in vehicles for starting, lighting and ignition (SLI batteries).
  • Industrial batteries: Batteries used in industrial applications and larger machines.
  • Batteries for electric vehicles: Batteries that have been specially developed to power electric vehicles.

The standards for the digital product passport should be fully developed and adopted by the end of 2025. The transition phase will then begin, during which the affected companies will have to implement them. By 2027, all products with batteries must meet the requirements of the digital product passport. Other product groups such as textiles and consumer electronics will then follow.

In the textile industry, the digital product passport helps to track the material composition, production conditions and recyclability of textiles. This promotes sustainable practices and enables consumers to make informed choices, helping to reduce environmental impact.

The digital product passport is being implemented step by step. Companies must pay attention to standardization, interoperability, a federated system landscape and the democratization of information. Pilot projects and clear strategies are crucial for a successful introduction.
